



The Museum of Eretria is one of the most important archaeological museums in Greece , and presentes findings from various eras. The sculptures of the temple of Dafnephoros Apollo possesse a distinguished place , and especially the cluster of Thisea with the amazon Antiopi. The Museum is located adjacent to the site, which helps to better understand the exhibits. The building belongs to the Greek state and its expansion to a second great hall was funded by the Swiss Archaeological School.

Discoveries come from excavations of local Inland Revenue and foreigner archaeological schools (Swiss and British School) in the wider region of Eretria.Chronologically it covers the entire spectrum of the region inhabited by the Bronze Age until the Roman times. There is a chronological classification of cabinets and objects, ranging from the oldest and leading to later. In the Museum ceramics of all periods are exhibited, sculptures of the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic Age, bronze objects such as vases, figurines, luxury goods from the East, gold jewelry, silver, bronze, fagetiani (buckles, chains, earrings, etc. ), lamps and weapons. As important exhibits can be considered sculpture cluster with Antiope and Theseus from the west pediment of the Temple of Dafnophoros Apollon, a clay statuette of a Centauri from Lefkandi , which is the earliest representation of this mythical being, the bronze horse blinkers embossed with a scene from northern Syria and Panathenaic amphorae.
In the lobby of the Museum there are houses sculptures of the 4th century B.C. and inscriptions, on one of which is "boustrophedon" is writen. The first main room of the museum includesa prehistoric findings of Eretria, as well as three neighboring prehistoric settlements, those of Xiropolis, of Amarynthos and Magoulas.
Xiropoli is located northwest of Eretria and has an important position by the end of the Early Helladic and Mycenaean times. The settlement of Amarynthos was discovered on an artificial hill southeast of Eretria, starting from the Early Helladic period (circa 3000 BC). Magoula is located between Eretria and Amarinthos and is also also dated to the Early Helladic Period.

The major exhibits, however, come from the PG cemeteries of Lefkanti and Eretria. In the second room, there is the west pediment of the Temple of Daphnephoros Apollo, which date from the late 6th century BC , and is an example of high art. The windows, surrounding the sculptures are objects from everyday life, private life at home, sport life (Panathenaic amphora), from religious life and the deathly life (offerings from Classical, Hellenistic and Roman tombs). Finally, in the courtyard of the museum, architectural tombstones and resolutions are presented , as well as the significant findings of the ceramic furnace found in the ancient market of Eretria and goes back to Middle Helladic Period (2000 - 1650 BC).
